Literacy

At Carlton Gardens Primary School, we are dedicated to fostering a deep understanding and love of Literacy. We aim to equip students with the skills to listen, read, view, speak, write, create, and reflect on a wide range of spoken, written, and multimodal texts. Students engage with these texts across various contexts, building accuracy, fluency, and purpose.
 
Our students develop their understanding of English through three interrelated strands outlined in the Victorian Curriculum 2.0; Language, Literature and Literacy. These strands are developed and explored through the key areas of Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening.
 
In our Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 classrooms, students participate in daily phonics sessions that follow the Little Learners Love Literacy program. Our Grade 2 students began the program in 2026, extending this consistent approach across the early years. Following the initial implementation in 2025, our Prep and Grade 1 teams have continued to refine and strengthen their use of the program, building staff knowledge, consistency and confidence in delivering high-quality phonics instruction. Through stories, songs and hands-on activities, children learn to confidently read and spell using sounds and letters. The program is designed to build strong foundational literacy skills while fostering a love of reading and writing in a natural and joyful way.
 
In all year levels across our school, we provide explicit instruction in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening through whole-class and small-group activities and provide time for independent practice. Student conferences are an integral part of our Reading and Writing lesson structures, allowing for the setting of goals to enhance each child's progress.
 
Each classroom at Carlton Gardens Primary School has a classroom library which offers a diverse and up-to-date selection of reading materials, encouraging student engagement and fostering independent reading habits.

Mathematics

At Carlton Gardens Primary School, we believe that every student has the potential to excel in mathematics. Our goal is to foster a positive attitude towards mathematics, build fluency in mathematical processes and develop the confidence to apply mathematical skills in real-life situations.
 
We encourage our students to approach mathematics with confidence, curiosity, and critical thinking—while also having fun and enjoying their learning journey. 
 
We used the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 to develop deep understandings of our ‘Big Ideas’ in Mathematics, these are central to learning and connect numerous mathematical concepts into a coherent whole. These Big Ideas are:
Our teachers plan meticulously, using ongoing assessment and monitoring to track student progress. This allows us to provide targeted support and continuous improvement, ensuring that every student receives a tailored learning experience.
 
Through a combination of explicit teaching and problem-solving scenarios, we challenge students with engaging and meaningful tasks that connect to their world. Our mathematics program is designed to develop the four essential mathematical proficiencies:
