Established in 1884, Carlton Gardens Primary School has a long-standing tradition of providing quality education to the children of Carlton, Victoria. Originally known as Rathdowne Street Primary School, it has also been referred to as Carlton Primary School throughout its history. Our school has grown and evolved with the community, adapting to meet the changing needs of our students and their families.
Carlton Gardens Primary School has operated continuously since its opening, although it briefly served as a hospital during the influenza epidemic of 1918. Nestled in one of the earliest developed areas outside of central Melbourne, Carlton Gardens Primary School boasts a prime location just a short distance from the city’s Central Business District. The school has historic links with nearby institutions such as the Melbourne Museum, RMIT University, the Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre, and the University of Melbourne.
The original school bell, a cherished symbol of our history, still rings to signal the start of each school day and stands proudly at the heart of our campus. Our historic front building reflects the rich heritage of our school, while behind it, a modern four-story structure blends contemporary learning spaces with playful features—like a slide that takes students from the first floor out into the yard.
Our outdoor spaces are designed for fun and activity, highlighted by a premium basketball court, covered play areas, and a giant sandpit for creative play. Just across the road, students can also enjoy the expansive Carlton Gardens and playground, adding even more opportunities for outdoor exploration and adventure.
Carlton Gardens Primary School prides itself on its inclusive and multicultural community, welcoming families moving to Melbourne from all over the world. We celebrate diversity and foster a nurturing atmosphere where every child feels valued and supported.
